I invite you to share by posting a response to one or to both of these questions in our Comment section of the website. Go ahead! Click on there. You don’t have to write much. Thank you for coming along on the journey with the Spirit and the Scripture today.

Tiffany art. Tree of Knowlege of Good and Evil

Hello there!
I want to thank Tiffany Keith, for sharing her art with us. Tiffany has been practicing Lectio with the podcast for a few years now. This week’s art is one Tiffany created in response to last week’s podcast. She shared with me that after praying with the text it occurred to her that part of what is experienced by “eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” is this (my paraphrase): we start with the experience of the blessing of pure being, the blessing that “I am enough just being here.” Then, we partake of the “tree” and start seeing ourselves measured on a scale from evil to good, comparing ourselves to others, and we lose that sense of pure being. Thank you again, Tiffany!

Anyone else up to sharing your creative side here on the podcast page?

Lenten Grace,
Todd

Blessing the Dust

Hello there!
As we begin our Lenten journey towards the cross, may your heart, your mind, your spirit become drawn to Christ in a new and rich way. May you turn again towards the One who started your life’s adventure by putting life together in the first place. And may the Spirit, who surrounds you, guide and strengthen you as you go about the nitty-gritty everyday living but, perhaps, with fresh inner-seeking. That’s what Lent can be. Thank you for being a part of Lent with me!
Deepest Peace,
Todd

Transfiguration Icon

Hello!

This week, we are meditating upon the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus. May the Presence of God be for you like the light that filled that mountain top. And may your fear be lost in Christ’s “Do not be afraid.” Be well.

Honest about the darkness perceptive about the light

“In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.” ~ Jesus, in Matthew 5:48

May the graciousness you slow down to truly receive from the One who created you stir in you generous living toward others, even and especially when it isn’t the easiest thing to do and be at all. Deepest Peace, Todd

Blessing of Salt, Blessing of Light

Hello from the sub-zero temperatures of Colorado Springs!
My dog, Shadow (a black lab-shepherd mix), and I greet you warmly. You may hear Shadow sniffing around in the background during the podcast this week. I hope it’s not too distracting. It was nice to have her company on this end. The church — where my iMac resides on which I record the podcast — has been closed a bit this week due to winter weather. But I snuck in today to be able to send up a recording for you, my listeners. I hope your connecting with God during our mediation and prayer time is restful and engaging. Be well! Stay warm.
In God’s Deepest Peace,

A Nest On Your Altar

Hello There~
I want to express my gratitude for each of you joining in from across the globe. It’s a hoot that almost as many of you are joining in from international locations as from the United Staes now.  And I have been in communication with more of you lately, which brings warmth and satisfaction to my experience in this ministry. Anyway, thank you!

Also, I thank Trace Bundy, who provides our tune this week, for letting me share his music here. I’ve been a fan of his for a number of years now. When I wrote a while back, asking for his blessing to share his music, he most graciously responded within a couple of days. He spent time with the podcast and said, “I’m a huge fan of Lectio Divina!” You’ll be hearing more of his music in the weeks to come.

Well, may your day be rich with God’s love and joy. And may your time in the quiet be nourishment indeed.
Warmly,
Todd

I’m happy to have you with me as we meditate and pray with the Scripture today. May God’s mystery of grace abide with you right now. As H.A. Williams puts it, “The more God gives me his grace…, the more I am myself.” Receive that grace. Become more you.

Hello Friends!
A quick word or two. I am attempting to get my podcast back up on iTunes so folks can also download episodes in mp3 format. There have been some difficulties, but I think I’m about to get them worked out. Stay tuned on that.

Secondly, I am still requesting that you post or email me, if you haven’t done so already, who you are (first name is fine), where you live and what brings you to my podcast. I can’t stress enough how much it helps me to know who’s out there coming along for the ride.

May your Advent be rich with joy and openness to God!
Todd

Hello!
This is a place for meditation and prayer and seeking God’s nearness through slowing down with the Scripture. Sometimes the nearness comes as affirmation and sometimes it comes as challenge. And perhaps at times, the silence is all there is. No matter what, I trust that God is giving you and me just what is needed for the path. Thank you for joining me in this. May the first part of the Advent journey, which begins this Sunday, unfold just as needed. Don’t forget to drop me a note in the comments section!

Hello Friends!
Good to be back this week. I had an amazing experience with my Practicing the Way of Jesus class in San Francisco last week. I highly recommend my professors’, Mark Scandrette and Daniel Kirk’s, books to you. This week’s image is from one of the many works of art from Graffiti Alley in the Mission District of San Francisco. It seems to me that it speaks of one’s chosen-ness, which pops out for me during this week’s Lectio time. Thanks for joining me in the quiet. Breath deep with God!

Secret of the Seed

“The biblical revelation is about awakening, not accomplishing. It is about realization and not performance principles. You cannot get there, you can only be there, but that foundational Being-in-God, for some reason, is too hard to believe, and too good to be true. Only the humble can receive it, because it affirms more about God than it does about us…” ~ Richard Rohr in Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality, pp.29-30

What is the Invitation?

Hello Friends!
Welcome. After recording this week’s podcast, I realized that I have actually stepped out of the stream of the lectionary. This is because our Senior Minister, Kent Ingram, is briefly allowing some of the Genesis texts to center our congregation as we begin a season of “90 Days of Blessings.” Kent is normally a lectionary preacher but for three weeks he is preaching a series from Genesis. I will be returning to the lectionary in October. I hope you will continue to meditate and pray on the scriptures with me, regardless!

A New Covenant

Greetings!
Glad you are with us today. Here are the steps to the Pause Prayer from Lindy Douty’s book, Praying in the Messiness of Life (pp. 37-38), which I walk you through in this week’s podcast. Thought it’d be helpful to have in writing as well.

The Pause Prayer
(use in that moment when you find yourself experiencing an emotional charge of some sort)

  • Take a deep breath.
  • Accept the fact that you are a human being with human responses.
  • Shift to spontaneous thanks for something specific, and watch the energy shift.
  • Breathe a benevolent breath of appreciation for whatever has triggered the emotion. If an interruption makes you smile instead of frown, add that to your store of self-knowledge as you learn what gives you a feeling of aliveness.
  • If the emotional surge is negative, rather than rush to judgment of someone else or yourself, ask: What in me is getting hooked? What wounded part of me just had the scab knocked off and needs my compassion? What fear is being triggered? Is there a way to express my feelings within proper boundaries?
  • Thank God for this wise inner guidance system.

So, let me know what this is like for you or how God opens something new up or brings a specific learning for you. I would enjoy hearing!

God’s Deepest Peace,
Todd

Getting the Message

Amos 8.1-12 for Sunday, July 21, 2013

Hi There!
I am glad you have visited my podcast. Like last week, we are attempting to pray with the prophet, Amos, with his strange and hard words of rebuke for the people of Israel, as they have apparently abused and used the poor and the weak in their society. What’s this like for you? What is it like for you to pray contemplatively with Amos? I’m curious.

I have heard more than one scholar point out the strange fact that the Judeo-Christian scriptures, of all of the world’s holy religious texts, are the only ones which have prophetic rebuke of the followers of the tradition saved and cannonized for all to see and remember. Perhaps our praying with these words and not just studying and analyzing them in their historical context (which of course we need to do as well at other moments) can allow God to speak richness down into our lives like no other form of reading of the texts.

May your day be filled with guidance, strength and grace from God.

Amos 7.1-14 for Sunday, July 14

Greetings,
I’ve been away for a couple of weeks. It’s good to be back! Again, summer is my very busy travel season. Thank you for your patience when I am away. I haven’t prayed Lectio Divinia-style with the prophets too often. So, this week’s text is a bit strange feeling. But I trust that even when a part of the Scripture is not easily entered into, God can use even that piece of the grand story for good and growth. I’m interested in hearing how this is, or isn’t, the case for you.
Deepest Peace of Christ,

Still in the Storm

Hello Lectio Friend~

It’s good to be back after a brief time away. Summer is a very busy season for me, with mission trips, conferences, special events and such — as well as a bit of vacation. So, that’s just to say that there will be a few more weeks coming up which will have gaps in the podcast. But stay tuned! You may want to take advantage of the archives here on the web site when there’s a gap.

Let me take this opportunity to share a bit about who we are as a collection of pray-ers. Since May 2012, we now have had listeners from over 80 countries as participants with the podcast. What a joy! On any given week, we usually have listeners from 20 countries. Most of our weekly folks live in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Ireland, Denmark, Poland, Italy, South Africa, Singapore, Russian Federation, Mexico, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Republic of Korea, Malta and Malaysia. But there are visitors from 60 other countries as well.

Considering our international collection, I would enjoy hearing how my of leading Lectio does and does not translate into your cultural setting. I’m always up for learning from you.

Thanks for being a part of this.
Deep Peace of Christ,
Todd

To Have Without Holding

Hi There,
I hope in some way that you find God’s presence and stirring through listening and paying attention to the Scripture in this week’s audio podcast. What word, phrase, image seemed to arise in the text this time? I encourage you to post it on our Comments section — with or without your reflections on it. My experience with Lectio Divina is that, when I do it with others, oftentimes, God seems to use the noticings of others to reach me as well as through the Scripture itself. Thanks for coming by and practicing. I pray you have a wonderful week!
Deep Peace

Tongues as of Fire

In an atmosphere of security and trust, persons are likely to be more ready to change. The child who trusts the mother lets go and takes the first unaided step. A social prophet is better received when listeners have learned to appreciate his or her integrity and friendship. Healthy growth more easily takes place when all participants interact in a mutually supportive environment rather than when some manipulate others to secure the ends of the manipulators.

Hello~
I’ve been up in the mountains fly fishing for a number of days with my two brothers (quite good to be in those waters and wrasselling those trout). So, this week’s podcast comes a couple of days later than usual. I hope this Sixth Sunday of Easter is full real Bread for your walking in the Kingdom. Thank you for joining me in meditation and prayer.
Deep Peace,
Todd

Alpha and Omega

Listen to this week’s podcast here:

The Bible is an act of faithful imagination. It is not a package of certitudes. It is an act of imagination that invites our faithful imagination that makes it possible to live faithfully. The Bible is an act of imagination that is rooted in memory but that presses always toward new possibility that is in front of us. ~ Walter Brueggeman in Living The Questions

As I mention in the podcast this week, Brueggemann’s term “faithful imagination” is not some Disneyland-pretending or escaping, but about following Christ in such a way that we bring our whole selves — as persons and as a community — to the Bible story. We bring all of our hearing, seeing, feeling, thinking — our entire imagination — submitted to God. And we expect to meet God there!

May your meditation and prayer be rich with such imagination of faith today!

Deep Peace of Christ,
Todd

Hello,
I hope our Lectio podcast brings some peace and perhaps God’s Presence to your life today. This week, I am pleased to introduce the creative work of Tai at Nature Sounds of Kuranda, Australia. Tai has a real gift in recording natural sounds of all kinds and shares them with the world. You will hear Tai’s recording beneath my reading of the text and for a bit at the end of the podcast today. Thank you, Tai, for your gift and for allowing us to experience it here in our meditation and prayer!

Where The Way Leads

Listen to the audio for this week, here: Luke 19.28-40 for Palm Sunday, March 24, 2013

“Many [of us]…live in a fairly constant state of noise, with their unresolved past and the uncertain present breaking in on them. [We] lack a still center and it is only for such a quiet point that we can listen attentively….Too frequently we do not understand the hermit’s discipline, a discipline that needs to be ours in spirit, if not in fact” ~ Urban T. Holmes III

May this time of meditation and prayer be nourishment for your still center, that you may then listen, notice, be attuned to God showing up in front of you today, with your family, friends, neighbors, enemies, co-workers, lover, stranger. May your still center bring with it the joy Christ provides in his “unforced rhythms of grace” (Matt 11).

Thanks for joining me today!
Deep Peace,
Todd

Stories Move in Circles

Listen to the audio podcast here: John 12.1-8 for Sunday, March 17, 2013

“I would much rather say that every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different from what it was before…into a Heaven creature or into a hellish creature…a creature that is in harmony with God, and with other creatures, and with itself, or into one that is in a state of war and hatred…” ~ C.S. Lewis

Today, join me in meditation and prayer with the Scripture. Let this be our turning together towards Heaven and towards the persons you and I were made to be. Choosing to face towards God, we then experience the One who is the real power and the real love that transforms. Join me!

Deep Peace Today,
Todd

Hello~
I am glad you are here. I hope you don’t mind, but I would like to ask for your personal prayer for a dear friend of mine, Alison, who is struggling with a terminal disease. At this moment, she is walking a very scary part of the path. Would you please ask for healing and joy for Alison, her husband and two young children? Thank you. And may your continued Lenten journey be rich with the Presence of Christ — in darkness, in light, in all of it.

Teach Me Your Paths

Listen to the podcast here: Luke 13.31-35 for Sunday, February 24, 2013

Hello~
As you will hear in this week’s audio podcast (above), we are given another step, another opportunity, to trust more fully in God — like Jesus does in the face of Herod’s hunt and the religious leaders stirring up fear and anxiety. We continue on the path of Lent towards Easter. How is your Lent going so far? Have you taken up something new or let something old down so as to make special room in your day — your life — for God? Lent is a time for introspection and meditation — not for it’s own sake but for the sake of new beginnings. May it be all it needs to be for you!
Trusting God with You,
Todd

Transfigure

Listen here: Luke 9.28-36 for Sunday, February 10, 2013

We each come to prayer with our distractions. This is not anything to be ashamed of at all. Be kind and gentle with your self as you enter quiet and discover the state of your real reality. The point is not to permanently remove distractions and such. The point is that they have their time and place. And they have a time for rest and floating on by. Solitude and prayer is the time for them to float on by, however many times we need to let them go; however many times we need to set them like a leaf on a stream. As we do this, we are allowing a clearing of space within us for God to more freely move and heal and transform our living into more peace. Just thought I’d share a little about this as I have lately found numerous folks struggling with shame or un-needed guilt over distractions in prayer.

Peace Deep Down,
Todd

Luke 4.14-21 for Sunday, January 27, 2013

Hello There ~

Personal retreats in solitude have been powerful for followers for centuries. As I ask in my podcast this week, I sure would like your input on potential personal spiritual retreat themes. Here’s what I’m up to. I am considering creating downloadable retreats for you to then take with you on your mobile device to the retreat center of your choice. The idea would be this while you are on the retreat: Lots of sleep, lots of quiet, perhaps some hiking or sitting in the woods and journaling. And, two or three times each day, you would be invited to listen to me lead you through a spiritual exercise based on a certain theme for the entire 2 or three days. What life themes or Scripture themes would you be drawn toward for this kind of experience? Either share it with me by clicking on the Comments button or send me a quick email (todds@fumc-cs.org). I’ll be gathering your ideas for a while, but don’t forget!

May God’s presence be felt within and around you this day!

Matthew 2.1-12 for Sunday, January 6, 2013 – Epiphany Sunday

The Wise Ones

Matthew 2.1-12 for Sunday, January 6, 2013

(NOTE: Maybe read the following only after you have listened to the podcast first. My thoughts were where the text and Jan’s artwork took me. But it will take you somewhere different. I’d enjoy hearing from you and where it takes you as well!)

Isn’t Jan Richardson’s artwork beautiful (http://janrichardsonimages.com)? This one is called The Wise Ones, and reminds me that, like the wise ones of the story in this week’s text, we may often be required to travel in the darkness and by way of alternate routes for our spiritual journey to safely or wholesomely continue. Have you ever noticed how your relationship with the Divine seemed very straight forward — you go “there” and return directly back the same way, each time? And then, one day, you notice somehow that your adventuring with God was not to be so straight forward —  your next step was not to be an easy or obvious one. So, we find ourselves on such days. We go by night, with our fragile selves, having been touched by being in the small and fragile Presence of Christ, to return to our “home” by another route. That’s pretty par for the course, if we are truly on adventures, isn’t it?

May your week and Epiphany Sunday be an adventure that curves, goes sideways, goes straight, goes two steps forward and one step back, but nevertheless is found to be a holy adventure indeed.

Thank you for sharing the trail with me today.

Deep Peace,
Todd

Thoughts from Others on Lectio Divina

photo

My dog, Bolt, and I say “Happy 4th Day of Christmas Season!”

I hope your holidays are going well for you. We’ve had a few snows up here at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, so our family has especially enjoyed the season. One of my favorite things to do in snow is taking my dogs out on a late night walk in the peaceful quiet of snow-covered streets and trails. That quiet is a unique kind of quiet. I had the fortunate experience of doing this a couple of nights ago, with my friend, Troy, when his family came over for Game Night at the Spencers’. Good stuff.

I want to share a couple of thoughtful pieces with you today. They are excellent reflections on what the practice of Lectio Divina is about. I hope you find them both helpful and insightful. Here you go:

Tiffany Keith’s Blog:
http://www.tiffanykeith.com/2012/11/12/practicing-relationship-growth-and-not-christmas/#.UN3iIqU0q0s . I especially like the creative little video Tiffany and some of her classmates at Iliff School of Theology made (see bottom of her page). Their take on the practice is a little different from mine but there’s always room for variety, right? And Tiffany shares some wonderful thoughts on her first-hand experience of Lectio Divina. I agree with her, real transformation doesn’t come in the “Wow!” moment but in one’s resting and participating with God over time. We can keep reminding ourselves that it’s God’s work in us, not our work or earning, that transforms. The invitation is to show up, participate, be with God, in whatever ways possible every day (Lectio Divina is one of countless practices). And also to remember, God does not force Godself upon us, which is why our assent/participation is so key. Finally, some of us may find helpful Tiffany’s experience of when to respond and create during the practice (after instead of during the reading) and of needing to follow along with the reading, rather than simply listening. There are so many ways of practicing all of the practices, aren’t there? What are you thoughts?

Contemplative Outreach’s Resources: http://www.contemplativeoutreach.org/category/category/lectio-divina . On their page, see under Documents, select the Lectio Divina Brochure. I really like how this brochure includes the practice of Centering Prayer with Lectio Divina. My favorite way to practice Lectio is to do Centering Prayer during the Contemplation time at the end of the practice. That is, my experience of “resting with God” in contemplation, has to do with being still and quiet and as wordless as possible. Some of the saints call this “gazing into the eyes of God and allowing God to gaze into our eyes, wordless.” Again, what are you thoughts?

I’ll be back next week with another podcast. None this week, as I am taking time with my family. Hope to hear from you.

Deep Christmas Peace,
Todd

Waiting for the Revealing

Micah 5.2-5a for Sunday, December 23, 2012

O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
And drive away the shades of night,
And pierce the clouds and bring us light.
~ O Come O Come Emmanuel

I dedicate this time of prayer to all of those who’s hearts are so broken by the mass-shooting in Newtown, CT — especially those families and loved ones who lost a beloved in the shooting. “O come Thou Day-spring…pierce the clouds and bring us light…”
With you in Advent prayer,
Todd

The question no longer is: Can I do it? Am I able? Can I overcome my moodiness, my laziness, my sensuality, my grudges, and resentments? The only question is: Is Jesus Christ able? Can my Savior, the Lord of my life, revive my drooping spirit and transform me at Christmas as he transformed the world through his birth in Bethlehem?

Jeremiah 33.14-16 for Sunday, December 2, 2012

Metaphor is a form of language that cannot pass…logical scrutiny, cannot make it through the laboratory tests…[The] Bible is chock full of metaphor, which means that if we assume that “literal” is the only means to “serious” we are going to be in trouble much of the time….

Reading, as it were, puts the solid food into our mouths, meditation chews it and breaks it down, prayer obtains the flavor of it and contemplation is the very sweetness which makes us glad and refreshes us. ~ Guigo the Second (quoted in Eugene Peterson’s book, Eat This Book, p. 91).

Greetings Listener!
I pray you find this week’s podcast a nourishment for your day. When you get the chance, post a quick comment about yourself and your experience with the podcast in our Comment section.

Another suggestion: If lectio divina is a helpful prayer practice, you may also find that meeting with a trusted spiritual director once a month to be a solid practice as well. If you are not familiar with spiritual direction, please let me know and I can help you learn more about it. I have served for many years as a spiritual director for adults and have a spiritual director myself. In short, spiritual direction is a chance for you to have prayerful and confidential conversation about where you are noticing God’s presence (or seeming absence) in your life. You can also read more on the Spiritual Directors International website: http://sdiworld.org.
Let me know if I can help more around this. I always enjoy talking about spiritual direction with folks.
Deep Peace with You,
Todd

Have you taken a listen to my conversation with Richard Rohr? You’ll find a link to that at the top of the podcast page. Richard has been a keen influence and mentor of mine over the past 17 years. Hebrews 4.12-16 for Sunday, October 14, 2012

Hello There ~
Thanks for meditating and praying the Scripture with me today. After listening, I invite you to post the word, phrase, image that seemed to be given to you by using the Leave a Comment button (above, right). Sharing your further reflections is not necessary in this, but if you would like to share those, it could help our Lectio Divina community build up in some new ways. Please share.

The phrase that was given to me today was, “We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality…” It is a very present gift to me, as I am currently walking with a friend facing a harsh illness and potentially the conclusion of her life on Earth. After many weeks, we have struggled to witness answers to our prayers for my friend’s healing. Today, I am drawn to the reality that Jesus did indeed face weakness and testing himself, and so, I am sensing a new trust that he knows more about what my friend needs than I do. I am drawn to all of the ways my friend is walking the Christ-road in very full, though hard, ways. Thank you, God, for walking it with her.

How about you? Share what gift was given in your prayer time today.

In Christ’s Grip,
Todd

Greetings!
I hope our meditation and prayer time today will be a time of rest with God for you. We begin with some reflections from Richard Rohr on the “language of descent” (from Rohr’s book, Everything Belongs). And then, we walk together through the Welcoming Prayer (see more at http://www.contemplativeoutreach.org), a fine practice for every day. James 5: 13-20 for Sunday, September 30th, 2012

James 5.13-20 for Sunday, September 30, 2012

“God is seeking fellow sufferers who will pause longer than others and look more deeply than others…” says E. Glenn Hinson. May meditating and praying with the Scripture help you and me to pause longer and look more deeply. Honestly, this week’s text is finding discord in my heart — I find myself pushing against it — as I have been praying for the healing of a dear friend who is suffering so much, physically and emotionally right now, and no healing seems to be coming. Yet, I choose to remain in hope that’s bigger than me and I choose to look more deeply and longer…Peace Deep Down, Todd

James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a

James 3.13-4-3; 7-8a for Sunday, September 23, 2012

“Live well, live wisely, live humbly. It’s the way you live, not the way you talk, that counts…”

God of all goodness and strength, grant me discernment and direction today, as I find you uncovering my real motives, my real desires. Transform my heart into one more reflective of your own. So be it.

What prayer does this text lead you to pray today?

Welcome to my new podcast site. I had to create a new one since my previous hosting company is ending their service. Please forgive me if things are a bit clunky for a while. Having to re-learn things with the move. I’m excited about the potential of being here on WordPress.com though. Let me hear from you!

This week’s podcast is here: Sunday, May 13, 2012. John 15.9-17. May your week be rich with rest in God!

Be Well,
Todd
