  1. Every day I have been wishing for a different reading. I feel this one is flat. Then this morning it strikes me as ominous that Jesus gives Simon a different name to go by. As my wife and I struggle with seemingly never getting on top of our finances I hear Jesus give Simon a new moniker – and knowing the struggles Peter then has, at least we are in good company – in our faith to follow Jesus.

    1. I think I know what you mean by “wishing for a different reading.” Some weeks a text that shows up in the lectionary seems to be less than or not desirable somehow. But then I remember that part of the beauty of using the lectionary is that I am kinda forced to be exposed to parts of the Scripture that otherwise I would not be allowing God to reach me through. It helps me try new trails in the adventure, and not just stick with my favorites.
